Zeldin Attacker to Remain in Jail

The Fairport man charged in an attack last week on the Republican nominee for governor, Congressman Lee Zeldin, will remain behind bars for now.

David Jakubonis has been held since Saturday on a federal charge of assaulting a congressman.

A federal judge has adjourned the case for 30 days to review evidence, including Jakubonis's mental health history.

He was arrested Thursday night at a Zeldin campaign rally. Video showed him climbing onto the stage and approach Zeldin with a two-pronged "cat knuckle" weapon.

He reportedly told investigators he had been drinking that day and didn't know who Zeldin was.
