Rochester Mayor Declares Gun Violence Emergency

Rochester Mayor Malik Evans is declaring a gun violence emergency in the city.

He says the declaration will give him more tools to close streets, and move resources to the trouble spots.

He says police and City Hall will be working on two fronts to stop the violence -- intervention and prevention

Evans says much of the violence results from petty disputes on social media, or escalated incidents of domestic trouble.

He says getting results won't happen overnight, and success will depend on cooperation from the community.

Rochester police Chief David Smith officers will be targeting the city's 50 most violent-prone street segments -- and the root cause of crime on each.

Smith says grant money from the state will support more overtime for officers, the hiring of a mental health clinician, and better lighting and nuisance abatement in marginal neighborhoods.
