Man Dead, Child Injured in Incident at South Ave. Garage

UPDATE: Rochester police say the one-year-old baby who was critically injured during his father's weekend suicide is doing much better.

Doctors do not believe there is any permanent brain damage.

The man was holding the baby when he jumped from the top floor of the South Avenue parking garage early Saturday morning.

The man died at the scene.

The family is from out of state and was in Rochester to visit an ailing family member.

Doctors hope to send the baby back to the family’s home state in the next couple weeks to begin rehabilitation. 

A man is dead and a child is in critical condition after an incident at the South Avenue parking garage in downtown Rochester about midnight. The man jumped from the top floor of the garage while holding the one-year-old. The man's wife called police. The man in his 40s was pronounced dead at the scene. The child was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital. Police say the man had jumped before they could get there. The family is from out of state and was in Rochester to visit an ailing family member. The Major Crimes Unit is investigating.
