State Department of Health Ordered to Release Data on Nursing Home Deaths

A conservative think tank has won a court decision ordering release of full data on coronavirus deaths in New York nursing homes.

The Empire Center won a case in State Supreme Court, which ordered the State Department of Health to provide the records within five business days...and pay the court costs.

The center says in a statement that the people of New York have waited too long to see this information.

The Empire Center says New York has been collecting comprehensive infection and mortality data from nursing homes throughout the pandemic, but releases only partial death tolls to the public.

The State Health Commissioner said last week that nursing home residents who died in hospitals were counted as hospital deaths.

Opponents say they should be counted as nursing home deaths, and that the true nursing home death toll is thousands greater than the state reports.
