Sen. Schumer Wants Employees to be Given Notice Before Layoffs

Senator Schumer wants to close loopholes in the federal law that requires advance warning before big employers make layoffs.

It follows the sudden April layoffs at 15 Friendly's restaurants in Upstate New York. Hundreds of employees were laid off without even a day’s notice.

Schumer is pushing legislation that would change the circumstances under which employers are allowed to lay-off large numbers of employees without giving them advance notice.

One provision requires employers with as few as 50 workers to comply with the law.
