Man Indicted for Dragging Deputy in June Incident

A Rochester man has been indicted on several charges after an incident in which he allegedly dragged a Monroe County deputy with his car.

A grand jury indicted 42-year-old Memzel Stewart, Jr. on charges of assault, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and resisting arrest.

Stewart and another man were arrested in June after a deputy pulled them over on Route 531. During the traffic stop, deputies say Stewart slid into the driver's seat and put the car in gear. The deputy tried to stop him, but was dragged several feet before getting loose.

Stewart was found hiding in the woods off Elmgrove Road. Deputies say he was a parole absconder.
