Rochester, NY -- The City of Rochester is marking the 200th birthday of abolitionist Frederick Douglass by putting replicas of his Highland Park statue at other locations around the city.
The first three of the 13 planned statues will be unveiled Thursday. Ten more will be ready by the end of the summer.
Plans also call for the original statue to be moved a few hundred feet along South Avenue and turned around to face the street.
The statue was erected in 1899 and was reportedly the first monument ever erected to a black person in the United States.
