A sailboat sank to the bottom of the Erie Canal over the weekend after crashing into a bridge pier in Lyons.
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office said the 39-footer was steering around some floating debris. At that moment, operator Frederick Cooley's view ahead was blocked by his passenger. By the time Cooley saw he was heading for a center bridge abutment , it was too late.
The boat struck the abutment, putting a gash in the hull that sunk the vessel.
Cooley and his passenger abandoned ship in a dinghy and they're OK.
