(13WHAM) Geneseo, N.Y. - Livingston County Sheriff John York is warning residents about phone solicitations and scams.
Sheriff York says if you receive a call from anyone claiming to be a representative of a state or local law enforcement group or association, please call your local police agency to verify it prior to making any donation or commitment to that person.
Police and fire departments do not solicit money over the telephone, but some unions do.
Sheriff York says some of the most popular scams currently being reported in the area are the"Grandparent Scam". That is when the grandparent receives a frantic phone call from whom they are led to believe is their grandchild. A scammer, posing as their grandchild, explains that he or she has gotten into trouble, often in Canada, and needs their help.
Also making the round he ays is t the "Sweepstakes-Lottery Scam" which begins with an unexpected email or phone call notification that "You have won!" a large sum of money in a lottery.
