Buffalo, NY -- An alleged drug kingpin has been sentenced to 25 years in federal prison for drug and cocaine charges and a daring escape from the Monroe County Jail.
Federal prosecutors say 36-year-old Joseph Mitchell, of Rochester, used smuggled saw blades hidden in a bible to cut the bars on his jail window and escape while being detained on the narcotics charges in 2011. He was caught a week later in Sodus.
He and his younger brothers had been accused of distributing cocaine and cocaine base in the Rochester and Elmira areas. Search warrants at Mitchell's home turned up a loaded gun and a half million dollars in cash from a secret compartment in a fish tank.
The brothers and an alleged accomplice in the escape are awaiting sentencing.
