(13WHAM ) Albany, N.Y. - Three-Dimensional printers have become controversial.
The 3-D printers can shape plastic into functional devices-- healthcare equipment, for example.
They can also apparently print out working guns.
New York Senator Chuck Schumer doesn’t like it.
He says fully functional handguns can be made entirely out of plastic which means they can slip past metal detectors.
"Now, anyone-- a terrorist, someone who's mentally ill, a spousal abuser, a felon--can essentially open a gun factory in their garage,” Schumer said. “And, the only thing they need a computer and a little over a thousand dollars. [That’s with] no background check, and you don't even need to leave your house to make hundreds of these guns."
Schumer says he wants to make sure an existing law prohibiting weapons covers this new plastic firearm.
