A local man has pled guilty to vehicular assault in connection with a 2004 crash that left a Rochester Police officer critically injured.

The Monroe County D-A's office says that James Extale was driving drunk and with a revoked license when his car his 26 year old Nicole Cookinham who was responding to a routine call when the accident happened.

Cookinham underwent several reconstructive surgeries and was never able to return to duty.

Extale was convicted in 2005 of assault and other charges, but that conviction was set aside due to technical issues. He was found guilty in a new trial in 2008 but that assault conviction was again sent back to the courts.

As part of Thursday's plea, Extale has waived his right to appeal and he will get a sentence of three and a half to 7 years.
