Hundreds of people gathered at Kodak Hall at the Eastman Theatre on Monday morning to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the day his birthday is celebrated.

A number of people, including Iris Banister, who is Chair of the local Martin Luther King commission, felt a special significance in celebrating King's life on the same day as a black President is being inaugurated.

Banister told WHAM 1180, "When you think of civil rights, you think of all the struggles, we think that this is the fruition of it, that america is coming together under that faith and that audacity that king talked about."

There were a number of other celebrations for Martin Luther King day all over our area, including at St. John Fisher and Nazareth Colleges and at the YMCA of Greater Rochester
