(13-WHAM) Assemblyman David Gantt is trying again on mayoral control of schools.

Gantt resubmitted his legislation that would abolish the school board and give the mayor control of the Rochester City School District.

“We have to do something to improve the condition of urban schools,” Gantt said on Sunday.

When the legislation was first submitted several years ago, Gantt had the support of Assemblyman Joe Morelle and former Mayor Bob Duffy. But Mayor Tom Richards has said he is not interested in pursuing mayoral control. Gantt’s bill did not gain any traction last year.

Superintendent Bolgen Vargas said, “I will not allow myself to be distracted from the work that needs to be done. The Rochester City School District is facing some serious challenges. I owe it to each child to make sure that every day when I get out of bed I do my very best to make sure that they get the best education that they can get.”
