Federal, state and local officials gathered at the Amtrak station in Rochester Monday morning to say that plans are advancing for replacing that structure.

When the station was built over 40 years ago, it was supposed to be a temporary facility, and officials say it is just not meeting the needs of the current ridership. They say that rider has gone up 89 percent over the last five years, to more than 144,000 passengers over the last year.

The new station will meet standards for those with disabilities. It will also offer a "side track" which will make it easier for both freight and passenger trains to go through that station.

The new station will cost over 23-million dollars, with much of that federal money.

It's expected that the new station should be completed sometime in 2014.
