LeRoy Police have filed charges against an Erie County man in connection with an incident that involved the discovery of a homemade hand grenade in a car trunk on Monday morning.

Police have now identified the suspect as 26 year old Paul Kaiser of East Aurora.  They say that at about 6:45 a.m., they stopped Kaiser’s car for speeding.

During the traffic stop, police smelled marijuana and they searched the vehicle and found the hand grenade type device in the trunk. Lake Street in Le Roy was shut down for about two hours and several houses were temporarily evacuated as a precaution.

The State Police bomb squad removed the explosive.  Kaiser now faces charges that include criminal possession of a weapon, a pot possession charge and traffic offenses.

Authorities also planned to search Kaiser’s home in Erie County to see if any further explosives were there.
