Two of this area's major cancer centers may  be merging.

The Wilmot Cancer Center at the University of Rochester Medical Center   and the Pluta Cancer Center, may be joining forces.

Officials say it could take several months to hammer out an agreement, but it's an idea they think will benefit cancer patients in this area, according to Jonathan Friedberg,  Acting Director at Wilmot Cancer Center:

"These are two well estabished cancer centers and I think together we will form an even stronger opportunity for patients to get high level cancer care in an compassionate envirmonment."

Kelly McCormick-Sullivan, president of Pluta, located in Henrietta, says they would continue to operate there under the Pluta name, but now they will have access to some of the research and clinical trials that are available through URMC...

"We are delighted that not only are we going to preserve this mision but with this partnership we are actually going to be enhancing that mission."

McCormick-Sullivan adds that with the uncertain economic environment affecting health care this merger will give Pluta more stability.
