The United Way of Greater Rochester has raised nearly $28 million in its just completed campaign, which is $2.4 million more than the goal.
The amount raised was slightly less than the amount of money raised last year. Officials say this year's campaign was helped by "challenge" grants of a half-million dollars from the ESL Charitable Foundation and a $100,000 grant from Constellation Brands.
A United Way official also says that Kodak donations were higher than expected. Originally, the United way was expecting a potential loss of 25 percent in donations from Kodak retirees, but they only experienced a 10 percent dip. Overall, Kodak employees and retirees donated $1.1 million.
The United Way is focusing on helping organizations in five key areas: early childhood, school age youth, aging, disability and crisis services.
