The Rochester Americans scored a pair of power-play goals, but it was not enough as the Amerks dropped a 4-2 decision to the Grand Rapids Griffins Wednesday night at Van Andel Arena. The game marked the final matchup of the season between the former North Division rivals, who each posted wins on home ice throughout the two-game season series....Rochester returns home to The Blue Cross Arena on Friday, Dec. 21 as the Amerks battle the Binghamton Senators in the first leg of a two-game set between the intrastate rivals.

Center Eric Wood considers the Buffalo Bills' annual games in Toronto to be ``a joke,'' believing the team gives away its home-field edge by playing under a dome and in front of ambivalent crowds....Wood added he understands how playing games in Canada's financial capital and largest city benefits a small-market team such as the Bills. He enjoys traveling to Toronto and taking advantage of what the city has to offer culturally.
 
       What's not enjoyable, Wood says, is playing there.
It’s a bad atmosphere for football. I mean, nobody wants to play there. I guess for opposing teams it beats the hell out of going in somebody else’s stadium and dealing with a bunch of crowd noise.”

 Greg McElroy is going from third-string to starting quarterback for the New York Jets. He will get his first NFL start on Sunday, stepping in for the benched Mark Sanchez and leapfrogging backup Tim Tebow. McElroy took the first-team snaps at practice yesterday.

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly has been voted Associated Press coach of the year after leading the Fighting Irish to a spot in the BCS championship game...Kelly received 25 votes from the AP college football poll panel. Penn State's Bill O'Brien was second with 14 votes.

Carmelo Anthony scored 31 points in his return to the lineup, and the New York Knicks beat the Brooklyn Nets 100-86 last night in the third meeting this season between the city rivals. J.R. Smith added 19 points and Tyson Chandler had 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Knicks. Joe Johnson scored 17 points for the Nets...THE KNICKS ARE 19-6

The Yankees and Ichiro Suzuki have finalized a $13 million, two-year contract that keeps the 10-time All-Star in the Bronx. The 39-year-old was obtained in a trade with Seattle on July 23rd.

The Red Sox have signed right-hander Ryan Dempster to a two-year contract. The team announced the signing yesterday, nearly a week after two people familiar with the negotiations said Dempster had agreed to a $26.5 million deal.

The community of Newtown, Conn., continued the healing process Wednesday night with a return to the basketball court.
