NFL star makes his Sandy Hook tribute more personal than most

Jack Pinto, one of the 20 schoolchildren killed in Friday's monstrous Sandy Hook massacre, was an avid fan of the New York Giants, and in particular of Victor Cruz. The star receiver learned this when he reached out to the Pinto family and learned they were thinking about burying their 6-year-old in Cruz's No. 80 jersey.

 So while the rest of the Giants have written "S.H.E.S." on their helmets in Sharpie for Sunday's NFL game against the Falcons, Cruz's message is more specific: He's written the boy's name and the words "my hero" and "this one is 4 you" on the cleats and gloves he's wearing.

 seahawks coach Pete Carroll said he regrets allowing his team to attempt a fake punt while they had a 30-point lead in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills <http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/buf/buffalo-bills>.
Carroll claimed that he did not call for the fake punt, stating that the play was part of the Seahawks' original game plan.

An opposing team had not won at New England in December since 2002. But Colin Kaepernick  and the San Francisco 49ers DID IT LAST NIGHT HOLDING ON   for a 41-34 victory.
Making just his fifth NFL start, Kaepernick passed for 216 yards and four touchdowns to help the Niners clinch a playoff berth. San Francisco is 10-3-1.

 Kaepernick's fourth touchdown pass of the night came with 6:25 left -- a 38-yard strike to Michael Crabtree. The winning play was set up by LaMichael James' 62-yard kickoff return. ..
       New England had tied the game seconds earlier, rallying from a 28-point deficit ..Tom Brady passed for 443 yards and a touchdown, but threw two interceptions and was sacked three times


Matt Ryan threw three touchdowns passes and the Atlanta Falcons handed the New York Giants their first regular-season shutout since 1996, blowing out the defending Super Bowl champions 34-0 on Sunday....Eli Manning threw two interceptions for New York (8-6).

 Washington grabbed a share of first place in the NFC East by beating the Browns in Cleveland 38-21. Backup quarterback Kirk Cousins started in place of the injured Robert Griffin III and passed for 329 yards and two TDs.

The Dallas Cowboys made it a three-team division race by beating Pittsburgh in overtime 27-24. ..Roethlisberger  was picked off by Brandon Carr, who returned it 36 yards to the 1.

Denver went into to Baltimore and blitzed the slumping Ravens 34-17. ..  Peyton Manning threw for 204 yards and a touchdown in his ninth consecutive win over the Ravens. ..   The 11-3 Broncos have already clinched the AFC West. Baltimore has lost three straight but clinched a playoff spot when the Steelers lost to Dallas.

The Houston Texans are AFC South champions for the second straight year after beating Indianapolis 29-17.

Green Bay clinched its second straight NFC North title with Aaron Rodgers passing for three scores in a 21-13 win at Chicago.

Ryan Tannehill completed 22 of 28 passes for 220 yards and two TDs as Miami dumped Jacksonville 24-3.
