Commuters at a New Jersey rail station faced an unexpectedly perilous journey on their way to work, as an escalator at the heavily trafficked Exchange Place station in Jersey City suddenly reversed course. The malfunctioning escalator, which had been traveling up, inexplicably started going down, depositing riders into a large crowd gathered below. There were five non-life-threatening injuries. Experts speculate that the problem may be related to damage from Hurricane Sandy.
