Rochester Area Hospitals Plan to Move Forward With Elective Surgeries

Officials of both UR Medicine and Rochester Regional Health say returning to elective surgery for both hospital systems will be done starting with the most urgent procedures and move down the ladder.

Doctor Robert Mayo of RRH says both systems are able to handle elective surgeries plus any future surge of coronavirus patients that may follow reopening, as required by Governor Cuomo's order. Dr. Michael Apostolakas of UR Medicine says elective surgery patients will be tested for COVID-19, and both they and the caregivers will wear masks. Schedules will be arranged to try and have only one person in the waiting room at a time.

Loss of revenue from elective surgical procedures has been a financial blow to both hospital systems. Both UR Medicine and RRH say they're very pleased to be able to move forward again.
