Some NYS Lawmakers Considering Ban on Sale of Filtered Cigarettes

Democrats in the state legislature want to ban the sale of filtered cigarettes.

They say the filters on cigarette butts end up littering streets, parks and waterways. And they say the plastic in the filters hurts wildlife.

The sale of unfiltered cigarettes and rolling tobacco would still be legal. And it would still be legal to smoke filtered cigarettes sold outside the state.

The ban would include single-use e-cigarettes with lithium-ion batteries.

If approved, this year, the bans would take effect in January 2022.
