Electric Buses Coming To RTS

The Regional Transit System is expected to roll out ten electric buses later this year.

The transit system is buying them with state and federal grants, and the proceeds from the Volkswagen emissions case.

They cost about $900,000 apiece -- nearly twice the cost of diesel buses.

The state is hoping a quarter of all municipal buses statewide will be electric by 2025. The goal is to fully eliminate buses burning fossil fuels by 2035.

Transit officials say the new buses will be much quieter.
