New Bail Reform Laws Effective

A major bail reform law is now in effect throughout New York State.

The law gets rid of cash bail for most low level non violent crimes.

Supporters say it prevents low income people from having to stay in jail because they can't afford the bail.

However, opponents are concerned some released defendants will be a danger to the community and it will make it harder to keep violent offenders behind bars.

Thousands of people accused of crimes will stay out of jail until their cases are resolved.
