Cuomo Wants Tougher Laws On Sex Offender Social Media Use

Governor Cuomo's legislative wish list for the new year includes tougher measures to keep convicted sex offenders off social media and dating apps.

His proposal builds on a state law from 2008 that requires sex offenders to register certain online activities with the state. Cuomo says the law does not account for new technologies.

His legislation would require all sex offenders to disclose their screen name for each social media account or dating or gaming app they use, as opposed to just giving the email address they use for those accounts.

The new legislation would also make it a crime for convicted sex offenders to misrepresent themselves online.
