Public Memorial For RPD Officer Manny Ortiz Today

Hundreds of people are expected to attend today's public memorial for Rochester Police Officer Manny Ortiz.

The public memorial will take place at 11 a.m. at the Rochester Convention Center.

Ortiz died Saturday after he accidentally shot himself in the thigh and crashed along Empire Boulevard while driving to work.

Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter said this week that there is no reason to believe Ortiz's death was anything other than a tragic accident.

In lieu of flowers the family is asking for donations to the Go Fund Me set up by the Rochester Police Foundation to fund scholarships for his children.

The memorial will mean some street closures downtown.

The Broad Street bridge will be closed to traffic from 9 a.m. through 4 p.m. And South Avenue will be closed between Broad and Main from 9 a.m. until noon.

There is free parking in the South Avenue garage.
