The U.S. Supreme Court is dealing a big blow to labor unions. In a 5-4 ruling today, the high court said non-active members of public sector unions do not have to pay dues. The ruling overturns a longstanding precedent.
The Business Council of New York State is hailing the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in the Janus case -- calling it "a welcome victory for employee choice and freedom of speech."
But the Council also notes the impact of the decision will be limited in New York because of a provision included in the new state budget. It significantly limits an employee’s time frame and ability to opt-out of dues deductions, all but eliminating the freedom granted employees in other states by the Janus decision.
It's not clear if the New York provision will face a court challenge.
