They may have been squatters -- or burglars -- but a contractor working on an empty Lake Avenue house says they jumped him when he came to work this morning.

Rochester police blocked Lake Avenue through Charlotte for several hours after shots were fired inside the house across from Charlotte High School. Officers and a SWAT team surrounded the building, but after a time Investigator Frank Camp says they determined the intruders were gone.

The contractor says he noticed the door was open. Since only he was supposed to have a key, he checked the inside. He says two people attacked him on the second floor before running away. When he checked the attic he ran into a third person who fired shots at him. At that point he ran and called 911.
