Rochester, NY -- Work has begun to demolish the former Monroe County Detention Center, clearing the way for construction of the Costco store that will anchor Rochester's CityGate development.

Developer Anthony Costello says there were doubts a few months ago that the project would go forward when money needed to transfer the detainees was stalled in the county legislatures. Now that the demolition has started, Costco has committed nonrefundable cash for construction.

Costco is expected to be built this summer and open in the fall. Four restaurants will open soon, too. Then the focus will shift to construction of a hotel, condos and retail space.
